President’s Tan Talk – March 2023

The “star of the show” this month is unquestionably Phil Urquhart for placing top three in his age group in the World Masters Cross- Country, congratulations to Phil, well done. Phil’s elegant running (and falling over in the mud) style is evident in the photos below, what a class act. Notable that our recent guest speaker at our 40th Anniversary Dinner, Steve Moneghetti, won his age group, as we would all expect, blitzed it. The event in Bathurst had everything: lots of mud, and incredibly tough, hilly course, thunder, lightening…never a dull moment!

Another pictorial highlight was provided by long-time VRR veteran Bill Ryan, showing (from left) Kevin Horrigan, Ken Smith, Carol and Bill, and Michael Musgrove at the recent 10km Hobart Cross the Bridge run / walk. VRR members bob up in all sorts of places!!

Looking ahead, we are looking forward to a ‘Runner’s Reflection from VRR Member No 1, Greig McEwan, when he returns from his current voyage to Antarctica, see the photo of Greig at the world’s southernmost post office, one of many great photos I’ve seen so far.

Meanwhile, back at the Tan:

  • Long-time VRR member Rowan Cole has nominated for the role of treasurer following Doug Stokes deciding to retire from that role as of our AGM next month, and we again thank Doug for all his great work and ideas over his service to the club. We would welcome any other VRR member who would like to join the committee or simply make a contribution informally to the club. Please contact me if you are interested.
  • Members were reminded that this year’s Angela Taylor Memorial Run / Walk is on Sunday 23 April at Albert Park Lake, which is a very special event for VRR, having created the event more than 30 years ago in honour of Constable Angela Rose Taylor, killed in the Russell Street bombing. We need volunteers for course marshalling, so please ring or text me on 0411191115 if you can help out. (Further info below)
  • Patrick Herft stood in for Helen Myall as photographer for this month as Helen was not able to be with us. Many thanks to Patrick, see photos below and on Facebook. We look forward to seeing Helen next month.

We had a good attendance at the Tan, on (as usual) a beautiful morning for a run, including some new faces, and some returning members (see pic below), and it was great to see Peter and Jenny Field on a visit from South Australia.

We remain keen to get back to having tea, coffee etc at the Tan, and we’re working the the complexities of permits etc. Watch this space. Have a great month,

Michael

VRR President

VRR PHOTOS
This month our regular VRR photographer, Helen Myall, was on a break and we were very grateful to Patrick Herft for stepping into that role. Many photos are taken at each of our events and the one’s below are just a VERY small sample.
ALL the photos are posted on Facebook.

March TTT Photos

Our photographer, Patrick Herft taking a selfie with Jane Sturzaker.
Daniel Clifford is a former VRR member who we haven’t seen in many years. He brought his family along this month and by the looks of things, they had a good time.
It was great to see you, Daniel.

Paris Paraskevas is a face that we didn’t see a lot of during Covid, but has been getting along to the tan recently.
Another very welcome return..
Cynthis Ellery is a regular participant at our VRR events and as you can see, she came well prepared for the terrific autumn weather.

Greg Osbourne, always likes a bit of music whilst running – another one of our very welcome ‘regulars’.
Debra Robb ran a very strong 8km.

VRR has been a supporter of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation’s annual Angela Taylor Memorial Run/Walk, here are some details so that you can mark the date in your diaries.

It is now less than 8 weeks to go until the Angela Taylor Memorial Run/Walk – Sunday 23 April Albert Park Lake.
You can take a leisurely 5km walk around the lake or you can jog or run for 5km or 10km the choice is yours. If you cannot attend at Albert Park Lake you can also choose to virtually do the run/walk.
This event is held in honour of Constable Angela Taylor and all Victoria Police members that have died serving and protecting our community. This year proceeds will support the new Blue Ribbon Foundation Police Assistance Dog Program (PAD). This program enables Victoria Police veterans who require mental health support, to apply for free access to an Assistance Dog trained by Assistance Dogs Australia. This program can help change lives !
A massive thank you to our principal partner BankVic and also to ESSSuper – Emergency Services & State Super who will be hosting a complimentary BBQ for all participants.
