President’s Tan Talk – May 2023

Four significant things happened at the May Tan. The first was that it actually rained while the Tan Time Trial was happening. That is truly noteworthy because to the best of anyone’s recollections that only happened four times in our first forty years. Obviously many VRR Tan regulars anticipated that and stayed home.

The second significant thing was that Inclusive Sports Training (IST) joined us, for the running (no pun intended) of their annual championship run. IST first ran with us back in 2017, and we love their energy and the great “vibe” they bring whenever they join us. IST specialises in coaching athletes with learning disabilities and prepares them to participate in mainstream sporting competitions. (Over summer I regularly see them at triathlons that their members compete in.) IST recently had ten athletes competing at the VIRTUS games in France, where some athletes have won International Gold.
The third significant thing actually happened a couple of weeks earlier but was talked about at the Tan, with this year’s Angela Taylor Memorial Run / Walk setting a new participation record of over 1,000, what a great result. A very big thank you to our VRR volunteer marshals Kevin, Stephanie, Steve, Ken, Ken, Peter, Peter, Geoff, Anthony, Monish and Kym Kym, see photo below, many of whom are now regulars at the event. As most VRR members would know, we initiated the event more than thirty years ago after Constable Angela Rose Taylor was killed in the Russell Street bombing. Past VRR President Bill Noonan, co-founder of the event, was disappointed to miss his first ever Angela Taylor because he was unwell, but is now on the mend. The event honours Angela and all police members killed in the line of duty, and raises funds for Victorian public hospitals.

The fourth significant thing was that Marianne Martin completed her 200th Tan Time Trial, a magnificent achievement, congratulations Marianne.

In this episode of Stride Out we feature VRR Member No 1 Greig McEwan’s report on his epic Antarctic Adventure. Note that he continued an old VRR tradition of having his photo taken wearing VRR uniform at a significant international location. He looks like the Michelin Man because of the layers of clothing he is wearing to keep warm!!  (Check out Greig’s last photo, something about that looks NQR!)

Another notable photo this month is from the World Masters Cross Country Championships at Bathurst appearing to show VRR member Tanya Fiore-Yatomi ahead of Steve Moneghetti, in a race, except that Steve was a lap ahead of Tanya!!

Have a great month, see you in June,

Michael

May TTT Photos

VRR welcomed inclusive Sports Training to our May TTT.
More than 50 iST members braved the conditions, so combined with VRR members plus parents, helpers etc we had a very decent crowd listening to Michael Kennedy giving his pre-race briefing.

Ian Godfrey wasn’t going to let a little rain stop him!
Peter Black came prepared for the conditions.

Keith Partridge even RODE his bike to the Tan!!!
It was pretty muddy on ‘the dog leg’ as you can see in this photo of Kevin Armstrong.

In the April edition of Stride Out we displayed a photo of VRR member #1 – Greig McEwan proudly wearing his VRR running singlet whilst looking like the Michelin Man on his way to Antartica.
Well here’s the story…

Last month Stride Out published an article authored by Tony Freegard relating his adventures in the medical field.
I spoke with Tony recently, and got him to send me a few photos & comments to prove that VRR is EVERYWHERE.
Since last month, Tony has completed 20 bouts of radiation treatment and we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him at the Tan.

‘This smiling fool doesn’t know what goes on behind that wall !!
The ever cheerful Kate is about to whack me with that thing for being cheeky.

Here I am being airfried.
