President’s Tan Talk –  April 2021

The most significant thing about our April TTT was the growth in numbers, with around 100 runners and walkers enjoying a lap or two of the Tan on a beautiful, cool, clear Melbourne autumn morning, with everyone once again happy to be there, for our third post-lockdown event.

After welcoming everyone, including a few first-timers, I had to politely advice anyone recently arrived from Brisbane and Moreton Bay that they were a little less welcome, and needed to self-isolate and get tested. Fortunately there was no-one in that category!

After a big list of milestone achievers in March (including some catch-ups from the virtual era) we had a pause this month, which is unusual. We have a couple ‘on the brink’.

Of course the really big news is that we are looking to restart our fun runs, with dates etc listed later in Stride Out.
Importantly, the most immediate run, coming up on Sunday 18 April is the Angela Taylor Memorial Run / Walk, returning after missing 2020 due to COVID. I was pleased that a number of VRR members volunteered to marshal on the day, important for us in our continued role in conducting the event with Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, after we created the event all those years ago.

Our feature article this edition is a reminiscence by near-foundation member of VRR, Syd Bone. It is a very good read, in which he shares some advice about how to achieve longevity as a long-time and ‘mature-aged’ distance runner.

I will see some of you at the Angela Taylor run, have a great month.
