President’s Tan Talk – September 2026
Over more than 500 Tan Time Trials since 1982 it has rained during our Tan Time Trial just four times, as best we remember. The Bureau of Meteorology had forecast a high likelihood of rain between 7am and 8am, but only a low likelihood between 8am and 9am. So was our record going to be broken at the September Tan??
After looking very threatening, as has happened on a number of previous occasions, it rained after 7am, but before the Tan started, but yet again, it did not rain during the Tan, and the BoM was once again correct, as they generally are. We are very pleased that our record is intact!!
We were delighted yet again to have our friends from Inclusive Sports Training join us this month, their boundless energy adds to the enjoyment for all of us.
Members were advised of the recent passing of VRR Life Member Betty Horskins, aged 88, who had for many years been our Club historian. Some years ago Betty wrote the history of VRR, Footprints in Time. This was a significant undertaking. Betty “brought the club’s history to life”, telling stories not only of many significant VRR events over many years, but painting word pictures of the many colourful characters who have made the club what it has been, from the days before mobile phones and the internet, when VRR published the only (paper-based) running calendar for all of Melbourne, listing every fun-run that was known about.
The VRR running calendar allowed many thousands of fun-runners to participate in runs all over Melbourne, in turn supporting fund-raising by many local clubs, schools and charities. Betty’s husband Graeme, VRR Life Member, together with VRR member John Groves, produced and distributed the calendar for many years. |

| VRR Life Member Graham Edwards, an original VRR club member, celebrated his 400 Tan Time Trials milestone, with family members attending to celebrate this enormous achievement. Graham has for many years played a key role in collating the results of Tan Time Trials each month, an important element of the club’s activities. Congratulations Graham, and many thanks.
Our visitor from Germany, Antje Hinsch, (see photo) was not a Tan first-timer, having run the Tan with us on a visit to Melbourne about ten years ago. Her visit to Australia this time was to run the Sydney Marathon the previous weekend, where she ran a good time. Remembering her previous run with us, she flew down to Melbourne just for the day, to run her second TTT before heading home to Germany. Well done, Antje! |

| VRR member, Glenn Muller has been involved in our events since he was a teenager. Other commitments have prevented him from getting along as much as he would like lately, so it was marvelous to see him at the September TTT. |
|
|
Liz Wrigley (centre) missed the August tan because she was on a ‘girls cruise’, so the September TTT was a good opportunity for some healthy exercise. She’s escorted by Gary Turner and Kim Owens with Evan Kisler photo bombing in the background.
Welcome back, Liz |
