President’s Tan Talk – February 2026

Yet another beautiful morning greeted VRR members and friends at the February Tan Time Trial.

It was great to welcome back Monish Swamy, wife Kym Cao and young baby son Ari. Mum and dad have been busy parenting since Ari was born, and so now in VRR tradition Ari has completed his first Tan Time Trial, welcome Ari!!

It was also great to welcome back Anthony Baker to the Tan after about 15 years. Anthony is remembered for having run a pretty fast (Sub-3 hour) bare-footed Melbourne Marathon years back. (Must have tougher feet than me, I get sore feet just running from the beach swim to my bike in triathlon!!).

Also great to see Doug Wheeler back at the Tan after surgery, walking a lap as his recovery progresses and another Doug, Doug Stokes completed his first tan in a few months, coming back from an injury.

Our VRR Treasurer Rowan Cole was absent from the February Tan Time Trial, because he had something important to do. Rowan has been a VRR member ‘forever’, but he has also been a member of Hampton Life Saving Club since 1976, and is still an active patrolling member. These days lifesaving has added flying drones in and near beaches and waterways, looking for missing people, rips, submerged dangers and ‘marine creatures’. For the last two summer seasons, Rowan has also been a drone pilot with Life Saving Victoria’s ‘Remote Pilot Aerial Service’.

Pictured below is Rowan (centre), flying a drone. Well done Rowan!!

See you next month, have a good one,

Michael Kennedy

Chris Linton is a very welcome visitor to VRR.
She completed the 8km course, while her husband, Ian, opted for the 4km.
VRR member, Robert Elston was another 8km competitor.

VRR member, Malcolm Mackay always records a pretty handy time on the 4km course.
How often do you see the prez, Michael Kennedy in a pair of shorts?
Definitely dancing pins!

VRR members, Karen Travill (L) & Tanya Fiore-Yatomi (R) teamed up to show the blokes how it’s done!

2026 MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

A friendly reminder that fees for 2026 are now due.
VRR charges a nominal membership fee as it does not receive any sponsorship but needs to cover such costs as public liability insurance (~$1,200), tea and coffee for Tans, 12 TTT and milestone tee-shirts, plaques for milestones and trophies.  The Blue Bucket at the Tan for voluntary donations also helps to cover costs.

The membership fee for 2026 is unchanged at $20 for individuals, $10 for juniors, $40 for families (2 adults plus all children) with country members (greater than 100k from the GPO) half of these fees.  Junior members are those aged under 18 years as at 1 January 2026.

Payment via EFT is preferred, to:
VRR
Westpac
BSB 033-034
A/c 628622
Please include your full name and membership number in the reference field.
For completeness, please also send a confirmation email with the subject “VRR Membership Renewal” with your details to vrrcontact@gmail.com.

Alternatively, you can pay by cash (no cheques!) in a sealed envelope with your name and membership number at the Tan and pass it to me or one of the Committee.  If you need one, a membership form is available at www.vrr.org.au/membership/.
See you at the Tan!
Many thanks and happy running

Trail Running in the Italian Alps
Ed. – We received this email from Anthony Baker recently and thought that it may be of interest to some members.
Anthony did come along to the February TTT.

Dear Dr Michael Kennedy,

I am a Melbourne based runner and a previous member of the Road Runners.
I now organise week long trail run and trail walk trips to Italy (Brenta Dolomites).  I have two trips planned for July after a successful tour last year.

I would love to come for a run/casual chat with the group one Saturday to see if this would be of interest to anyone in your running community. I regularly run in different locations and enjoy meeting other runners.
Happy to also forward any print/online information to share.

Our Italian Alp trail runs are affordable, unique (loop and point to point runs from the doorstep of traditional comfortable mountain hut accommodation and also includes a via ferrata – iron path option).  The daily trail runs range from 15-20 km and 10-15 km daily trail walks.

We provide two run support crew (max 10 people) with alpine expertise, and each runner receives their own GPX files and tracker so as to run at their own pace – solo or with others (with designated check in points).

Routes are well planned with diverse and varied terrain and stunning landscapes from Alpine forests to high alitude passes and mountain lakes providing a satisfying physical challenge and personal achievement!.

If opportunities exist to promote or share more about what we offer, and/or some of the trail running that we have undertaken in different parts of the world, happy to share and support.

The website if you wanted to have a look is www.runmountains.com.au, with social media handles on insta and facebook.    Happy to chat in person.

Thanks
Anthony
